There are plenty of guitars out there that look really cool, and are at a good price, but they might not be right for your style of music, and will seriously put you at a disadvantage to get a good tone for your songs.

An Amp Goes A Long Way

An amp also should do more for you than have a lot of cool effects, and look cool. Your amp should basically get your ideal tone for you. You should be able to get a great tone for your style of music out of your amp.

Don’t Rely On Pedals

Another big thing to pay attention to, at least when you’re beginning, but also in general, is don’t rely on pedals to get your tone. You can buy a crummy little amp, and buy a bunch of pedals, but in the long run, this won’t work out.
