Band Practice
Practicing as a band
Band practice is where you’ll get everything done, and everything perfected, so it’s a very important part of being in a band. Lots of bands get nothing done, because they don’t know how to practice. Make sure everyone has their phones turned off, and their focus fully on practicing. Messing around is fine if you want to be in a loose, just-for-fun kind of band, but if you want to be really good, then you’ve got to get yourself, and your bandmates focused. But make sure everyone is on the same page about wanting to be in a really serious band, because maybe they just want to mess around.
“The Whiteboard Strategy”
This is something I use all the time, and works great which I call “The Whiteboard Strategy”. Basically, it’s using a whiteboard to show everyone what you’re going to be practicing, and what you need to get done. Write down the setlist that you’re working on, make notes about what about each song needs to be fixed, write down what everyone needs to practice by themselves, anything you want! Just having the whiteboard there, is any easy way to show visually what needs to get done, and can be erased and re-written really easily.
Other things to write on the whiteboard:
- Your practice schedule for the next month
- When your gigs are on that schedule
- All the parts for your new song, or cover song
- Quick reminders for lyrics, or a solo, or other parts of a song you always forget
In summary:
- Get focused
- Make sure your bandmates are focused as well
- Whiteboards can really help
- Don’t be afraid to be a leader and focus everyone
