Solo Practice

Why practice by yourself?

Practicing as a band is very important to bring together all of the instruments in your band, but practicing by yourself makes all of those sounds not sound like trash. You should know what to practice by yourself after practice. All of the professional guitar players, singers, drummers, and bassists don’t just come to practice and play everything perfectly, they have to practice all of their solos, beats, bass lines, and vocals at home. That’s why practicing at home can really help your band sound much, much better.

How to practice by yourself

The first thing to do when you’re going to practice by yourself, is figure out what you wan’t to practice. Once you’ve on decided the most important thing to practice, it’s very simple what to do next… practice it! Sometimes it’s a bit hard to know if what you’re doing sounds good though, so recording yourself is very, very helpful. See if you can set up either a little handheld recorder, or on your computer, because listening to yourself back in recordings, you really hear all of the little nuances of your playing or singing. Sometimes when you’re concentrating on your parts, you don’t realize exactly what you’re doing.

Steps to take:

  • Set some time aside for practicing your instrument
  • Decide what part you want to practice
  • Record yourself playing your parts
  • Listen to them carefully and fix your parts accordingly
Even though it may seem like practicing on your own might be a waste of time, it really will help your band sound that much tighter. Band practice is called band practice, because it’s where your band practices as a band, not when you work out your solo, or write the lyrics to the last chorus. Bands that practice their instrument outside of the band room will get much farther as apposed to bands who only practice at band practice.

In summary:

  • Practicing outside of band practice will greatly improve the sound of your band, and your playing
  • Recording yourself playing will really help you hear your own playing
  • Decide which parts you want to practice which would be beneficial
  • Encourage your bandmates to practice their parts at home as well.
