K.I.S.S. Method

I need a cool band name!

Thinking of a good band name can actually be quite difficult. The hardest part of thinking of a name is thinking of one that sounds cool, but not corny, and one that pertains to your style of music. The best way to accomplish this task, in my experience, is to use the K.I.S.S Method. If you’re unfamiliar with the K.I.S.S. method, it means Keep It Simple Stupid. Not only with this technique help you come up with a cool band name, but it will also keep your name short, and memorable for later promotion.

How does this method apply to band names?

Well basically this method applies to band names in the way that it applies to sports teams. Think of coming up with band names, as coming up with sports team names. What is your favorite sports team? I guarantee it isn’t the Spaceship Leprechaun Clown Torpedoes, or the Spider Web Establishment Complex. It’s probably a team like The Giants, or The 49′ers, or Barcelona. What do these names have in common? They are easy to remember. A band with a complicated, hard to remember name will get nowhere, because when you show up at a record company with your awesome demo, they won’t remember what your band name is when they try to call you back!

How to come up with a good band name:

  • Make a list of some cool words, and add some together
  • Pay attention to signs, what people say, or even graffiti, sometimes they have cool names
  • Take the name of a play (i.e. Boston, Kansas, Crow Canyon)
  • Don’t give up! Keep thinking, ask your friends, parents, anyone who can maybe help
There are a lot of names that you want to avoid, which I’ll discuss in the section of names that make sense. After you do get a good name that sounds cool, looks cool, and is simple enough, you’ll be really satisfied. Dumb long names won’t be cool for more then a few minutes. Unfortunately, the more and more bands that there are, it’s harder to come up with a one, or two word name that hasn’t already been taken. But they’re still out there, you just need to be persistent, and keep thinking of cool new names.

In summary:

  • Short names are memorable names
  • Dumb names aren’t cool
  • Don’t give up if you can’t think of a name right away, these things take time.
