Names That Make Sense

Don’t Make A Band Name Just Because It Sounds Cool

“I have a cool band name, it’s The Paraplegic Oxymoron Parade.” No, this is a very bad name. A good band name should not only be simple, as I explain in the K.I.S.S Method section, but they should also make sense. If you’re in a death metal band, your band name should not be “Prairie Dog Love”. Your band name should at least say a little bit about your band. It doesn’t have to be something like “Death Metal Lovers”, but it should be at least something kind of metal, like the name “Metallica” or “Slayer”. You know you’re going to be listening to metal from those bands, not acid jazz.

Promotional Value as Well

Past having a name that makes sense for your band, having a cool name with a story will also really help you with your promotion of your band. When you get interviewed for the paper, or for a band competition, they will almost for sure ask you where you came up with your band name. If the answer is: “I don’t know, we just kind of made it up.” then that will not make the small little article about the bands. I played with a band called Dead Scott once, and in their interview, they were asked where their name came from, and they said it was because they had a guy in their band named Scott who left, and now he’s dead to them. When the readers of that article read that, they’re going to chuckle, because it’s a funny story, and it’s interesting to read about.

Steps To Take:

  • Pay attention to what kind of music your band plays
  • If it’s something really metal, or really bluesy, or really soft, then name it appropriately, if not, think of a more middle-of-the-road name
  • Read about other bands with cool names you like, and see how they came up with their name
Trust me when I tell you, that you will never regret spending the extra time to use the K.I.S.S. method, and come up with a name that makes sense. It’s very difficult to change your band name once you’ve already started playing around, because promoters, fans, and venues won’t recognize you, so once you are set on a band name, you pretty much need to stick with it.

In summary:

  • Names that make sense will sound better
  • They will also help you with promotion
  • Name your name accordingly to the genre of music your band plays
