Making A List And Checking It Twice

What do you mean “making a list and checking it twice?”

Well dear reader, by that I mean when you’re leaving to go play a gig, and you’re going to pack all your stuff up, make a list of all the things you need to bring. This way you won’t forget anything, and have to drive back to your house in a haste because you forgot to bring a cable, or because your bassist forgot his strap.

What should you put on the list?

Well this is the part that is different for every musician. But luckily, there are some essentials that every player should have. First things first, you should have backups for as many things as you can. Because you never know when you’ll break something, and desperately need a back up. Here are something you might want to bring.

Guitar players:bring an extra guitar, extra strap, extra picks, extra cables, and backup batteries for your pedals.
Bassists: even bring an extra bass if you can, extra picks (you can mooch these from your guitar player if you need), and an extra strap, and batteries for your tuner.
Drummers: bring extra sticks, an extra snare if you can, and a drum key, you never know when stuff will get loose.
Singers who just sing: bring an extra mic, cable, and stand just in case theirs are bad.

Steps to take:

  • Make a list with all the things you need
  • Check off all the things as you pack them up
  • Double check the list and make sure you have everything you need
  • After you play the gig, determine if you need anything else, if not, use the same list every time
If you’re sure you don’t need something, then don’t bring it, but if theres a itsy-bitsy little part in the back of your mind that thinks “I might need it…” then bring it. It’s always better to be safe then sorry. You can even leave the extra stuff backstage if you want, just having it will make you feel better, and might save you in a sticky situation.

In summary:

  • Making a list of the things you need can really save you in sticky situations
  • If you might need it, bring it
  • Better safe then sorry with extra gear
