Why Cover A Song?
What’s the point of doing a cover song?
Covering songs is a way to have some songs to play with your band, while learning all of the tricks, and things professional musicians use in their songs. It’ll also get the crowd up and moving when they hear their favorite old song being played. I explained it in crowd pleasers, but there are certain songs that you can play that people really like, and others that people don’t know as much, but work really well, just because they’re good songs.
“I have lots of good original songs, should I still play covers?”
Well, you can play covers for as long as you want to. If you’re getting pretty famous, and you have a lot of great tunes, then feel free to just play original songs. But if you’re still in the process of getting all your #1 hit songs written, then cover songs work great for any set. Also lots of times, professional bands will play a cover or two per show just because it’s fun to play cover songs, and people really do like to hear them, even if they came to see that band.
Steps to Take:
- Decide if cover songs would benefit your band (they probably will)
- Decide as a band what kind of covers you’d like to play
- See what songs you might want to play – Picking A Good Cover
Covers are not only beneficial to learn, and go over really well with crowds, but they’re also really fun to play. It’s really fun to know how to play the song that your heroes wrote. It’s also really nice for a crowd to be listening to a band, and hear a song that they know. That’s why crowds for professional bands go crazy when a song starts, it’s because they like to hear a song that they know.
In summary:
- Cover songs are great learning tools, and fill out sets
- They’re really fun to play, because it’s a song you enjoy to hear yourself
- Crowds will love to hear the cover songs, because they know them
