Dynamics
What are dynamics?
Dynamics are the other very important part of songwriting. Some people make whole songs based around good dynamics, such as Rush. They don’t concentrate on the melodies as much as they concentrate on having lots of good breaks and parts. Dynamics, in a nutshell, are the breaks, and different parts in a song. Some examples of dynamics are half time breaks, solos, double time breaks, bringing the volume all the way down, and singing breaks.
When to use dynamics
Dynamics should be placed into a song when it’s getting repetitive and drab. Their whole purpose is to take a song that’s been doing the same thing for a while, and give them a break, that essentially breaks up the song. Some songs with great dynamics that can help you know when to use dynamics, are:
Jesus of Suburbia – Green Day
YYZ – Rush
Steps to Take:
- Find some songs that switch parts a lot
- Find out how the artists add dynamics into a song
- Find out how they transition between parts
Dynamics are a very important part of songs, and they’re what separate good songs from boring songs. They can be as little as dropping out a guitar, and as big as having everyone in the band stop, and one person does a fiddle solo.
In summary:
- Dynamics are a very important part of a song
- Dynamics are any change, or part in a song
- Having dynamics will make your song interesting
